At PACFS, we provide high-quality foster placements for children, young people, and parents with their babies.

Parent and Child Placements

Sometimes, new parents need extra guidance and support to help them raise healthy, happy children—especially if they themselves did not experience a loving and nurturing childhood.

Parent and child foster carers open their homes to vulnerable mothers—sometimes fathers or both parents—providing them with the practical skills and emotional support needed to care for their child.

Placements can take place:
· Before the baby’s arrival, helping parents prepare for parenthood.
· After birth, offering hands-on support in the early stages of parenting.
· Later in the child’s life, if concerns arise about the parent’s ability to provide adequate care.

These placements play a crucial role in ensuring that parents gain the confidence, skills, and stability they need to build a brighter future for their child. Due to the significant responsibility involved, the remuneration for carers in this placement type is higher than other foster placements.

Role of the Foster Carer

Foster carers play a crucial role in:
· Observing and recording key aspects of the parent-child relationship, including attachment and bonding. · Keeping detailed daily logs of events and interactions, which inform local authority decisions and contribute to a well-informed care plan.
· Supporting and encouraging parents in developing essential parenting skills rather than taking over childcare responsibilities. Carers step in only when necessary, such as when the parent is engaged in activities related to their child’s care or temporarily absent as agreed in the care plan. This type of foster placement is often an alternative to mother and baby residential units following a court directive. Local authorities may also recommend parent and child fostering if a parent is struggling to cope and lacks an extended support network. Support for Young Expectant Mothers Parent and child fostering provides a stable, nurturing environment for young expectant mothers who are either in care or unable to live at home due to pregnancy-related challenges. This placement benefits both the parent and baby by offering:
· A family-based learning environment where social learning happens naturally. · Guidance and emotional support from experienced foster carers. · The opportunity for teenage parents to continue their education or gain employment skills while learning to care for their baby. At PACFS, our goal is to provide the necessary stability, support, and guidance to help parents develop the skills and confidence needed to care for their child independently.

Become a Parent and Child Foster Carer

Parent and child fostering is an incredibly rewarding experience, but it can also be complex and challenging. Foster carers play a vital role in supporting and guiding young parents, often teenagers, as they develop the skills needed to care for their babies or toddlers.

To be successful in this role, foster carers need:

Assertiveness – to set clear boundaries while providing support.
Discretion – to handle sensitive situations with care.
Confidence – to guide and mentor young parents effectively.
Sensitivity – to provide emotional support and encouragement.

24-hour commitment – to ensure both parent and child receive consistent care and guidance.

Due to the significant responsibility involved, the remuneration for carers in this placement type is higher than other foster placements.

Fostering can offer the necessary stability and support, for young expectant women who are either already in care or are unable to continue living at home and enter care with pregnancy as a factor. There is of huge benefit to both the parent and their baby because parental of the social learning which is carried out in a family environment. The young parent gains from the support and advice offered by the foster parent. This setting also enables some teenage parents to complete their schooling or develop the skills of parenting alongside employment.
